Holiday Haunts

Once again, I’m thinking about holidays.  I actually have got round to booking the Crownfolios’ annual fortnight, but two things have brought my mind round to the subject again.  Or to be precise, to Holiday Haunts. This was the railways’ annual guide to hotels, B&Bs, and other such places to stay in Britain, the idea being, of course, that you got there by train.

In the first place, the ever-attentive Mike Ashworth sent this over, pointing out that it was by Bruce Angrave.

Considering the date and the Art Deco style, it must have been one of the earliest things he did.  Which is interesting enough on its own.

But it also, and unsurprisingly, got me thinking about Morphets, where a whole slew of Holiday Haunts material is for sale.  Anyone fancy 20 volumes from the 50s and 60s for your shelves?

Now, I know that we’re veering close to the dangerous territory of railway ephemera here, but bear with me.  Can you see that Eckersley peeking out at the bottom left of that picture above?  Well exactly.  Here it is in full.

Now Holiday Haunts was a blockbuster publication.  At the height of its success it sold over 200,000 copies a year, so covers like this, and indeed the Angrave above, would have meant modern design going into the homes of huge numbers of railway-travelling, seaside-holidaying people who perhaps wouldn’t have seen it otherwise.  I hope they, or at least their dissident teenage children, liked it.

Because this is ephemera, I won’t go into too much detail but Holiday Haunts was originally created by the GWR in 1906,

reached its height in the 1920s and 30s,and was then continued by British Railways after nationalisation in 1947.  And I am mostly telling you this because I have found this photo.  It’s the 1930 edition of Holiday Haunts being printed at the old Butler and Tanner print works in Somerset.

These men were printing about 50 metres from where I am typing this now.  I’d be able to see the building from my window, if they hadn’t taken the top two floors off when they converted it into flats.  So, Holiday Haunts, printed right next door to Quad Royal.  How about that.

But, in case you think me entirely lost to ephemera and local history, there is more purpose to this.  Because designers like Eckersley and Games didn’t just design covers for Holiday Haunts, they also designed posters to advertise it.  I’ve mentioned this Morphets lot already – there’s an Unger in there too.

But there’s more of an attraction for me in Holiday Haunts than just the great posters and the cover designs.  It also evokes a nostalgia in me for a past I never had.

The kind of British seaside holiday where the sun shone every day and you could get tea in proper cups on the beach (I know this is true, I’ve seen it on railway posters).  The kind of holiday where your family would stay in a camping coach.  And like it.

There are probably some clues in here about what posters – and particularly railway posters – mean today, and why they attract us so.  Ah the past, when the countryside was prettier, things were simpler  and people were happy anyway even if they did have to stay in a shed.  Possibly, but also possibly not; there were just fewer consumer goods and people thought that a railway coach for 8 for a week was a form of luxury.  Mind you, I’m off to stay in a mobile home on a French campsite.  So perhaps holidays – and people –  haven’t changed that much after all.

Modern British Collecting

I’ve had Paul Rennie’s Modern British Posters: Art, Design & Communication for a few weeks now, and am guiltily aware that I haven’t given it a proper mention yet.  Now there are a whole heap of real life reasons why this hasn’t happened, which I won’t go on about, but I am also aware that I’m finding it hard to come to a conclusion about it.  Which is absurd, so here are a few thoughts which may or may not come to a definite answer at the end.

This doesn’t mean that I don’t like it.  The book is beautiful and would justify its cover price (more on that below) for the illustrations alone.  You’ve seen a few on the blog already, there are plenty more littering this post.  There simply isn’t another book covering these subjects in this detail and with this kind of wonderful reproduction, so it’s a great thing to have.

Even better, the book mentions Quad Royal which is very flattering indeed.  So now it’s been immortalised in print, I’d better keep this thing going for a while, rather than just be a fly-by-night blog.

But as well as the book being a whole treasure trove of beautiful images, Paul Rennie also makes some really good points about posters and collecting, so much so that I am going to repeat them all over again here.  At the start, he observes that part of the reason that no one else has written this book before him is that the world of the poster, in Britain at least, is absurdly fragmented.

For example, railway posters, motoring posters and war propaganda all form specialised archives within separate institutions. Within the context of these distinct institutions, there is no urgent requirement to integrate the various and disparate parts into a history of visual communication.

I’ve touched on this in posts before – this odd disjunction between disciplines results in quirks like the National Railway Museum not thinking about its posters in terms of designers on their website and many other odd occurrences.  People who know all about railway posters might have no idea about the history of the Ministry of Information; the Imperial War Museum has no reason to care about what designers did before or after the war.  As a result, Modern British Posters is therefore pretty much the first decent survey of the whole, and that can only be applauded.

I’m also really interested when, at the end of the book, he sets out the history of how they started collecting, and the rationale behind what they chose to buy.  Partly because he started out by being fascinated by the Festival of Britain and then, in discovering more about Abram Games and the Festival symbol, found himself intrigued by a wider world of graphics and communication.  I trod exactly the same path too (I still have the little Festival badge that I used to wear on my hat as a teenager); it makes me wonder how many people have followed the same thoughts, and also why the Festival exerts such a potent hold over our imaginations even now.

But he also explains why they bought what they did.

Our collecting began, back in about 1982, with an interest in modern design… In 1982, the words British and Modernism seemed like a contradiction in terms.

The direction of our collecting was formed in relation to this widespread,and misguided, perception of British resistance to modernity. Conveniently, it turned out that British items were generally of little interest to international collectors and were, accordingly, less expensive to purchase.

In a way, I wish he’d put this manifesto right at the start of the book, because it’s really important.  This is partly because this is – and Paul Rennie freely acknowledges the point himself – a very partial book.  Every single illustration is from their own collection and so knowing the history behind it makes a big difference to the way you might read the book as a whole.  (I have been trying to work out whether there is a similar unifying idea behind our own collecting; so far I have only managed to come up with: It was cheap and we liked it).

The idea of the British relation to modernism itself is really interesting, and something I’d want to think about at length and probably devote a whole blog post (0r three) to.  But it also informs a lot of the arguments that he’s making in the main bulk of the book, so it would have been good to know beforehand.

Now, I have to confess that between these two ideas I did get a bit lost in the middle of the book. Now this is partly I think a problem of the form – Paul Rennie is heroically attempting a complete survey not only of the history of posters in Britain, but also of the social and economic conditions which affected how they were produced.  So it is, of necessity, a bit of a race through quite a lot of ideas and thoughts.

But also – and this is the bit I have been pondering for a while – Modern British Posters is at heart an academic book.  It’s having a dialogue with a lot of other books, and theories of art and design, ideas about cultural production and the transmission of modernism, and that simply isn’t a conversation that I am part of any more.  Academia and I gave up on each other more than twenty years ago, and since then I have been concentrating on the much simpler task of telling stories about people and things.  So the fault is probably with me rather than the book, for which I can only apologise.  I’d be interested to hear what anyone else thinks about this, particularly if you’re a design historian and have read it.

My brain is going to take a while to absorb it all, especially in this heat – there are over a thousand lots, and with many of them multiples of between two and fifteen posters, I haven’t a clue how many posters are actually for sale.  Really quite a lot I should think, and all I’ve been able to do is skim through them.  So, for the moment, here are a few nice items chosen at random for your entertainment.  And a few first thoughts too.

There are huge numbers of posters which I certainly have never come across at auction or illustrated before, from, the whimsical to the modern.

There are also a lot of coach posters in addition to the railway collection – well over three hundred.

But mostly it’s the sheer quantity of posters itself that I find overwhelming.  I could – and probably will – do a whole post just about the Royston Coopers that they have, most of which I’ve never seen before.

I should also point out that, once again, the estimates are insanely low.  That Royston Cooper is estimated at £50-100, as are the two Daphne Paddens below.

If even half the lots go for close to these estimates I will a) eat my hat and b) need a removal van to bring all of my purchases down from Harrogate.

It gets even madder when you start to look at the multiples.

Anyone fancy the Games, Eckersley and two Ungers above for £100 to £150?  I do, but I also don’t rate my chances too highly on that.

In the immortal words of Smash Hits, it’s back – back, back, back.

What else can I be talking about but the gift that keeps on giving, the Morphets auction of Malcolm Guest railway posters.  Part One was in January, Part Two I mostly ignored because its main attraction was a set of Heath Robinson drawings.  But I’ve been anticipating Part Three – all the posters from 1960 and later – for some time now.  The catalogue still isn’t up yet, but Morphets have now put a few more teasers on their site.  And, to my relief, there are some real gems.

The relief is because I’d heard that there were a lot of letterpress and otherwise dull posters up for sale – although with more than 2,000 posters in the auction, there may well still be.  I was also in fear of this kind of thing.

But the good news is that, in this preview at least, they seem to be in the minority.  Not only are there some fairly entertaining railway posters,

in varying degrees of kitsch/Ladybird books style, but what brings me real joy is that Malcolm Guest clearly went a bit off-topic and started collecting coach posters as well, seemingly quite a few if this preview is anything to go by.

I reckon that these three at least are by Daphne Padden (of whom more later this week).

But I don’t know for definite, because there’s nothing but the images up at the moment.  Any names and identification are my own guesses or research, which could be proved very wrong when the catalogue comes out.

There are two definite Royston Cooper’s as well, with a probable third too.

Any ideas?  In particular, if anyone knows who the artist of the last one is, please do let me know as it’s driving Mr Crownfolio insane right now.  He reckons it might be someone associated with Private Eye, if that helps at all.

And there is a rather nice Abram Games from 1967, which may well be a coach poster too.

The sale itself is on 21st and 22nd of July, which by my reckoning gives me just six weeks to work out how I am going to afford any or, ideally, all of this.  Right now, I have no idea.

Now, I promise, the last word on London Transport reproductions.  The discussion has rumbled on in the comments for a bit, but the big guns have now been called in to settle it.

This email is from Oliver Green, former Head Curator and Research Fellow of the London Transport Museum and so, more than anyone, the man who knows.

I think there’s some confusion in this discussion between a reprint and a reproduction, though LT may not always have been consistent about this.

An R in the print number would normally indicate a reprint, not a reproduction, and was carried out by the original printers using the original plates.

A reproduction would be a poster produced from a new photographic copy of one of the original printed copies. London Transport has been doing this since the 1960s, but mainly with posters from the pre-war period. As they were reproduced for sale, not display on the system, they are always smaller than the original standard 40 x 25 in double royal format used on the Underground.

Reprinting did not happen very often, although there have been a few exceptions like the famous Tate Gallery poster by Fine White Line which has gone through numerous editions since it first appeared in 1986.

There have also been very few attempts to go back to the original artwork to produce a new lithographic poster. Again there is the famous exception of the Kauffer poster for the Natural History Museum which he designed in 1939 but was never printed because of the outbreak of war.

The artwork was rediscovered by LT in 1974 and reproduced as a poster for the system in 1975. It is a moot point whether this counts as an original or a reproduction since a printed copy did not exist in Kauffer’s day.

Many thanks to Oliver for that, although I think that LT themselves haven’t been exactly contributing to the clarity.  They clearly did have a rare outbreak of reprinting in 1971 or thereabouts, producing the posters which stirred up this debate in the first place, but which they then labelled as reproductions in socking great black letters, confusing us all unduly.  But now I understand.

From all of which, two other things.  One is that Oliver Green has contributed an essay to the book which accompanies the Art for All Yale exhibition which I mentioned last week.  This, Art for All: British Posters for Transport has now arrived at Crownfolio HQ and I have to say is rather good, both readable and fact-filled.  Perhaps the highlight for me (and probably almost no one else) is that they have reproduced this advertisement, from Modern Publicity.

I once saw a poster of this for sale on eBay and didn’t buy it, which I’ve regretted ever since, as it answers one of my ever-present questions, which is why do more London Transport and railway posters still exist these days?  Clearly, the answer is because they were selling them as well as pasting them on the walls of the tube.  Pleasingly, the book tells me all about this – and how the railway companies held exhibitions of their posters as well.   Plus I have learnt lots about lithography, which can only be a good thing.

There’s lots more to like in the book too – including a complete catalogue of Yale’s poster holdings, which are much more modern than I expected, and which means that Mr Crownfolio and I own more than ten posters which are also in the Yale Center for British Art.   Whereas I don’t suppose anyone can say that about their Constables, so hurrah for the world-wide democracy of posters.

But also, in searching out the McKnight Kauffer that Oliver Green referred to, I discovered a whole wealth of museum posters in the LT archives, including some really wonderful ones which I’d never seen before.

And then also one or two that I did.

The very first time I wandered in to the old Rennie’s shop off Lamb’s Conduit Street, this Edward Wadsworth poster for the South Kensington Museums was on the wall.  I’d come in there quite by accident, wandering past, not even knowing that it was possible to buy old posters, but I fell in love with it.  I’d like to say that this was entirely because I recognised it as a great piece of design, but the fact that I’d worked in the South Ken museumopolis, and that the blue was a perfect match for my sitting room wall colour also had quite a lot to do with it.

But it cost hundreds of pounds.  I can’t remember exactly how many, but enough to seem like an awful lot then,  So I spent several weeks in a state of indecision, coming back to visit it a couple of times.  And then, finally, I didn’t buy it.

Which was, of course, a terrible mistake.  Never mind the value and the fact that I couldn’t even think about affording it now, it’s a beautiful poster, and would have looked wonderful on my walls for all of these years in between.

Shall we talk about this?

It fell out of my and Mr Crownfolio’s newspaper at the weekend; a handy pocket guide to collectables and antiques.  To my surprise, they even included posters.  Or really just the one.

Now, I know this is revisiting lots of things I have said before about the differential between dealers’ prices and the real world and so on, but really.  Eight hundred pounds?  My mind, this time, has been well and truly boggled.

So I went out hunting.  And I genuinely couldn’t find that poster as having been sold anywhere – it doesn’t seem ever to have been auctioned.

But I did find this.

It’s a year earlier, and I think was published by British Rail rather than London Underground.

Now, I don’t think it’s as good as the later Underground poster – you can see his design evolving to give the poster more impact between the two.  But is it worth ten, twenty times less?  Or even eighty times less?

Because this poster was sold at a railwayana auction earlier this year for just £10.  Yes, you did read that right.  Folded, but VGC.  My mind is now even more boggled than it was before.  So much for the internet flattening out poster prices.  If anyone can explain what is going on here, I’d love to know.
