Back again

I know that I keep promising to come back to subjects on this blog, and then it never quite happens.  There on the other hand, sometimes subjects come back to me, especially designers.  One of the great joys of writing about a particular designer is that quite often people get in contact with their own memories of the person concerned.  I’ve blogged about this before with Hans Unger, and it’s wonderful to get a sense of how much that person was respected and remembered.  Recently, quite a few people emailed who had worked with Pieter Huveneers.  In addition to being a great designer, he must also have been an inspiring boss and mentor.

I was also sent this by Jim Pennington, who never worked for Huveneers but does know good design when it comes his way.

It’s manual of transistors from the late 195os or early 1960s.  Everything you need to know about the valves of the day, apparently.  But rather lovely.

More surprisingly, a lot of people have got in contact about Denis Constanduros who, you may remember, did a few rather lovely posters for Shell and then saw how the world was going and went off to produce historical TV dramas instead.

He seems to have had a large extended family which, combined with a highly googlable surname,means that lots of his relatives have found the blog and got in touch.  His grandson sent me a very interesting range of material, including this 1939 article from the Radio Times.

So, in between the water carrying and play writing he was still painting as well.  There is also a picture of him and his aunt Mabel from the year before.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Spector, who isn’t a relative, sent me this book jacket illustration by Denis, for one of his aunt’s books.

This only survived by dint of being a wartime rarity.  Jonathan bought a wholly other book, called People are Curious, written by James Hanley and published in reprint edition in 1945.  But on the reverse of the jacket, off centre, was this – obviously the result of wartime paper rationing.  I think I preferred his posters though.

That’s not the only email that arrives here at Crownfolio Towers either.  Quad Royal is now important enough, it seems, to get press releases.  So should you want this poster, for example, for a scooter which was apparently ‘a joy to own, as long as someone else was paying the repair bills’,

Back on home turf, I’ve also been contacted by VintageSeekers, who are a new antiques site with a small number vintage posters on their books.

What Vintage Seekers is, though, is a shop window for dealers, which means that you are paying not only dealers’ prices, but commission on top.  So the poster above, quite apart from being for a place which you’d only want a poster of if you’d never been there, is £695.

I did get mildly excited when I saw a link to a Whisky Galore poster, as I had some memory that it was a good one.  What I was thinking of was this, which is by Tom Eckersley and I have been meaning to put up for your delectation for ages now.

What I actually saw when I got to the page was this.

Which is rather more in the style of a Ladybird book and, furthermore, will set you back £2,800.

All of which is enough to send me back into the arms of eBay, where even the silly prices suddenly look more reasonable.  This wartime Pat Keely is £99.95.

While the listing doesn’t mention his name, this car ferry poster is by Lander (and dates from 1960, fact fans).

This is a bit of an oddity, as I have no idea what the Pye logo is doing there, particularly as the poster seems to have ended up in America.

Although apparently the poster says that Pye were Britain’s largest exporters of radio and television.  I’m still not really any the wiser.

Finally, what I need right now is a time machine, to go straight back to 1973 and attend this.

When did you last see an auction?

So, spring is in the air and the auctions are springing up like dandelions on  the lawn.  Christies is tomorrow, as mentioned before, and in the meantime two more catalogues have popped up on the web, Onslows and Van Sabben, with auctions on the 18th May and 4th June respectively.

I’ll start with Onslows first, because it is a great soup of an auction and I don’t quite know what to think of it.  All of the usual subjects – cruises, railways, travel posters – are represented as you’d expect, but with very few jumping out at me demanding to be either bought or written about.  I quite like this Lander, partly because if the Isle of Man is in any way continental, I am an otter.

Our non-existent friend Ralph Mott is also represented with several posters, this being my favourite, mainly for the slower-moving world which it evokes.

There are also pages – and I mean pages – of wartime propaganda posters from both world wars.  Unfortunately, most of them are visual proof of the fact that most wartime posters were not masterpieces of design.  And I can’t even find a single one which I really love, this is about as good as they get.

But not all is doom and gloom if you wander through the catalogue.  This Rex Whistler is battered, but still lovely through the creasing and tape.

Even better (if you’re me, at least) are a selection of post-war London Transport posters.  Probably the most noteworthy is this Bawden.

I’ve always loved that last Robeson poster.  Although it’s called ‘When did you last see your Velasquez?’ it’s much more about being contemporary than art historical; in fact it’s like the essence of the mid-1950s distilled onto a single poster.  All of which means that, in my book at least, it’s a bit of a bargain at that estimate.  But I’m likely to be wrong on that one.

There’s quite a lot of overlap between Onslows and Van Sabben too.  Obviously they’ve both got a lot of foreign posters of various sorts, some of which are rather good.

More surprising is the other thing they have in common, which is a selection of large format GPO posters by interesting artists.  These two are in the Onslows sale:

If only I were a GPO museum, then I’d go on a spending spree, as they’re probably my favourite things on offer.  But there are a couple of other interesting items in Van Sabben too, like this pair of Reginald Mount posters.

The design of the latter one is almost good enough for me to overlook the fact that I am being addressed as Housewife again.  I’m not sure if Mrs Housewife is better or worse.

Other than that, it’s the usual suspects here: a few war posters, a couple of railway posters, and, of course, a BOAC poster.

I think they’re compulsory these days.

But for a small selection of posters (perhaps only 30 out of over a thousand) Van Sabben have managed to pull a few interesting ones out of the hat once again.  Still don’t know if I’m actually going to buy anything though…

Bracket Semaphore Signal

I’ve said it before, but there are too many auctions around right now.  And another day brings another catalogue in the post, this time for Talisman Railwayana Auctions.

This pre-war Ralph Mott poster is for me, the nicest piece in it.

That’s a rather good, and unusual, bit of modernist design used for a splendidly appropriate theme.  Roll out the gleaming new factories and let us hurtle into the technical future along gleaming railway lines.

There are, though, other ways of looking at it.

That’s the catalogue speaking.  Truly we are in the world of railwayana here.  There probably is a bracket semaphore signal itself in the catalogue somewhere; there’s certainly nearly everything else you’d need to build a railway.

There are also some posters too, but you’ll mostly have look yourselves, because all the catalogue pictures are like this:

Apart from the booking office grill and the bottle of commemorative railway champagne, there’s also a rather nice Pembrokeshire poster top right.  However, I don’t have the time or energy needed to find each poster as an individual image, so I’m not going to talk about them.  But they are there.  Although, once again, without any form of estimate at all.  I am almost getting used to this as normal for railwayana auctions, even though I am sure it makes me less likely to bid if I have no idea at all what they are expecting.  However, this catalogue introduces an additional twist, because telephone bidding is offered in the auction, but only for lots estimated at £250 or more.  So there is an estimate out there, somewhere, it’s just that they don’t want to tell us.  Sigh.

Rather than rack my brains over any of that, I thought I’d look for the collected works of Ralph Mott instead. And Mr Mott turns out to be rather good; operating on the borderline between modernism and deco in the years leading up to WW2.

I like that hotel one very much indeed.  Even better is this, for the Lancashire Industrial Development Council and the Travel association.

I’m unsure whether they want me to holiday in Lancashire or build a factory there, but it’s still stunning.  Ralph Mott is also responsible for one of the iconic railway images of the time.  If you like trains, that is.

He even diversifies into a more romantic style at times, particularly where abroad is concerned.

But there is a twist in the tale.  Because even though several reputable sites, including Christies, give Mott’s dates as 1888-1959, he never actually existed as a person.

What did exist was the artists’ agency of Ralph & Mott, who worked for all manner of people including railway companies and magazine publishers, and who used the pseudonym of Ralph Mott for some of their best designs and posters.

What’s even more interesting, is the discovery that Reginald Montague Lander was their studio manager, and one of the designers.  This 1935 advertising brochure (it is a brochure advertising advertising itself, if that makes sense) seems to suggest that it is Mr Ralph and Mr Mott who do most of the work though.

Apologies for breaking up the double page spread, but the book is too big for the scanner.

I’d need to take a proper look at the dates, but it looks as though the Ralph & Mott agency did most of their work before World War Two – this 1950 poster is the only exception I can find.

Perhaps they never really managed to get back to their previous pre-eminence after the war.  This would also fit with the fact that the vast majority of Lander’s signed work is post-war (the NMSI site says that he worked for them 1930-39).  But then there’s this GWR poster which he did sign.

There’s more research to be done here, not just on the dates but also the question of which other artists worked for the studio.  And I am slightly hoping that someone else has done all of it already.  Does anyone have any leads?

Thick and Thin

This has been hanging around on the bookshelves for a bit, waiting to find a home.

Which is quite a tricky problem as I can’t exactly roll it up as it’s on card.  Fortunately I’m starting to quite like it where it is; it may be there for a while.

The design is by Royston Cooper and dates, according to Christies at least, from 1960.  Until the long one turned up on eBay, I’d only ever known the image in its upright form.

But I think I prefer it reclining.  Here’s the whole thing for your delectation, and to enable you to consider just how little a coach trip from Worcester to Slough in 1960 would be as much fun as the poster.

All of which made me think about long thin posters.  Partly only so that I could post this, which is one of my favourite posters ever.

The entire 1950s encapsulated in a fifteen inch long piece of paper.  Genius.

Mr Crownfolio remembers that the seller told him this was produced for the Sheffield buses, but other  long thin posters turn up in a couple of places.

For example, the GPO produced strip posters for their vans.  At  51″ long, they were almost like till rolls and I’ve only ever seen them on the BPMA site.  Which makes this Austin Cooper, at a mere 6″ x 20″, a bit of a mystery.

It dates from 1944 so perhaps they were fixed to bicycles rather than vans.  Or something.

London Transport were the other home of strangely shaped posters, like this 1974 Harry Stevens that I think may have been meant for display on a bus stop.

And this Eckersley from 1960 which the LT Museum site call a panel poster.

Which were meant for both buses and tubes, it seems.

Panel posters were produced for display in Underground car interiors, as well as on the inside and outside of buses and trams. Because they did not have to fit a standard frame or wall space, they are smaller than other poster formats and vary slightly in size.

And I imagine that because so many were pasted on, only a few survive.  That’s a shame really, because in many ways they are very manageable posters, much easier to find space for than some of their bigger cousins.  At least I hope that’s true, because we’ve bought another two from the seller of the Cooper, by Studio Seven and Lander this time.  More on those when they arrive.

Further training

I’m really glad we don’t collect railway posters very seriously.  Because we’d be stony broke by now.  This year has just been sale after sale of high quality railway posters (with a fair slew of London Transport stuff too).  And now, to round off the year, there’s another one.

Onslows’s December sale titles itself  Vintage Travel Posters including Fine British Railway Posters.  Which means posters like this, by the dozen.

And this.  Which is quite interesting, because it’s by Brian Batsford, of book cover fame.

Although there is also this too, which, as I think I have mentioned before, every right-thinking home should have a copy of.

Plus there’s lots of pictures of trains too, but I shan’t be bothering you with those today, or indeed on any other day.  Apparently most of the collection comes from a single estate sale, although I think I can recognise a few things which did also appear at Morphets earlier this year.

These Holiday Haunts posters by Abram Games and Tom Eckersley also appeared there as a single lot too – the Eckersley in particular is a fine thing.

Elsewhere, it’s the usual Onslow’s miscellany.  This poster seems to appear in almost every single sale they do, which at the price it goes for is quite an achievement.

This is the rarer version, apparently, because it’s overprinted with the logo of the Cheshire Lines Railway rather than the LMS.  I have to say that I can’t quite bring myself to be bothered about the difference.

There’s also the usual selection of London Transport posters.  I love this Sheila Robinson (which comes with four other posters, it’s all the rage these days).

We once owned a LT poster by her and sold it.  I still don’t know what was going through our minds at that point, and now every time I see one of her designs I am filled with remorse.

These James Fittons are also rather good too.

There’s also a complete set of four of these Austin Coopers, one of which featured in the last Christies.

Although at that kind of estimate, a set of four is going to be a pretty substantial investment.

I also rather like this.  And it’s a lot cheaper too.

But then I am always a sucker for a chalk hillside figure.

Auction thoughts

Once the dust had settled, I had hoped to come up with some conclusions about the Morphets bus and train extravaganza of last week.  But the more I look at the results, the more my brain becomes addled.  This isn’t just the result of the scale of it all, although that hasn’t got any better, it’s also because I’m not entirely sure there are that many conclusions to be drawn.

So let’s start with some simple thoughts.  Expensive posters sold for lots of money.

This went for £2400, which is pretty much what I’ve seen it go for every time.

People still like to buy pictures of trains.  It seems that they also like to buy pictures of motorbikes too.

Any other reason for that fetching £300 rather escapes me.

People like pictures which look like real things in general.  So this Riley fetched £500,

while the Amstutz of the same subject only went for £240.  (Apparently it is possible to go and stay on restored camping coaches even today.  I must investigate further.)

Most of all though, what people like to buy most of all are nice pictures of landscapes which look a bit like proper art.  So posters like these,

are highly desirable and go for £600 and £750 respectively.

This rule seems to work for bus posters too – this Lander reached a very respectable £340.

Although even I can see the appeal of that one.

But as I mentioned before, things which looked less like fields and more like design didn’t do so well.  The Paddens, Coopers and their like didn’t reach anything like the prices I expected.  There were a few exceptions to this which are worth taking a look at.

Firstly, kitschy 50s graphics seemed to be selling well – this Bromfield fetched £440.

While at a lower level, this rather nice Studio Seven pair fetched £70, more than most coach posters were managing to do.

Even more odd was that, in a complete reversal of the normal situation, artworks fetched more than the original posters.  Royston Cooper’s airport artwork went for £320,

when you could have picked up the poster, as one of a pair, for £38.

While this Daphne Padden ark-work sold for £240, more than any of her individual posters made.  Go figure.

But there was one big exception to the rule that good design didn’t sell – although perhaps not quite so much of an exception considering that it is a picture of a field as well.

Tom Eckersley’s Lincolnshire reached £550.  Two readers of this blog battled with us over it – we lost but it’s going to a good home over in Norfolk so I don’t mind.  Not too much anyway.
